The True Meaning of Easter

The True Meaning of Easter

Dear friends,

I thought to share some thoughts about the true meaning behind Easter according to deeper mystical teachings. After all, it's not just about hidden eggs, bunnies, and chocolate. (It's better than that. I promise...!)

The real resurrection is not about a man and a single miracle. It is about our own resurrection that is ready to take place in our minds and hearts. We are here to open our hearts fully and to merge with Spirit. The true and important victory is not over bodily death, but over the self-enclosed tomb of our own egos.

We come from Spirit. We have lost our way and have become enamored of the baubles of this world. The need is to be reborn as the free uplifted Children of God that we truly are. Jesus said, "Everything I have done ye too shall do and greater." Clearly he could not have meant during the one life he lived on Earth. His disciples, great as they were, never did more than what He himself had done.

This rebirth is a long multi-incarnation process. The Sanskrit word smriti means both “the teachings” and "that which is remembered." We are Spirit and have forgotten that fact. We need to strive to remember who and what we truly are. Do you see yourself as a man, a woman, an American, a European, a collection of foibles and desires? If you are wearing a sweater and take it off have you yourself changed? Yogananda said, when he chose to reincarnate and saw the body and personality he was about to encase himself in, it seemed like “putting on a warm woolen coat on a hot summer’s day.” What a relief to shed our little selves! I have to say, I myself sometimes look in the mirror and think, "Oh my goodness! You again?!” There is a freedom we all yearn for. Free from habits. Free from compulsions. Free from desires and fears. Bathed in Spirit at all times and in all circumstances. What Joy!

May each of us take a few moments this Easter to reflect on the gift we have been offered and that Easter truly represents. May we let our our egos “die” and may we be reborn as free and as radiant as the greatest sages that have ever lived. May we allow our petty selves to hold us back no longer!
