We all know that there is more going on than easily meets the eye. There is a world of intuition and guidance that is subtle, but nonetheless there. We’ve all had hits of intuition that felt like true guidance, but the question most often asked of me when that topic comes up is, “How can you tell whether it is true guidance, or just my own unconscious desires bubbling up?” Good question!
The major stumbling block to drawing true guidance is our own fears and desires. Spirit is like a proper and careful good friend. If you ask her, “What do you think of my new shirt? Isn't it stunning? I just love it!” what is she supposed to say? On the other hand you might try “I just bought this shirt. I kept the receipt because I’m not quite sure. What do you think?” Ask yourself which is more likely to receive a true response. If you are already committed to a certain result or message, it is very unlikely you will be open and sensitive enough to hear something other. The quiet voice of intuition tends not to shout.
For myself, I find a lot of my work is trying to stay neutral. After all, Spirit is smarter than I am. How many times has a dreaded something turned out not just to be ‘not so bad’, but an actual blessing? And how many times have I wanted something, gotten it, and then thought, “Well, that sure didn’t work!” Strongly remembering those things leaves me a bit more humble and open, and in a state where I really do want to know what Spirit is trying to tell me. Once you are there (as best you can be), now ask your question with a genuine sense of “What do You think?” You’ll be amazed how often an answer comes.
