A fond farewell to events

Dear friends,

Thousands of speakers and events have been hosted by East West over the past 50+ years. For most of that time, we were one of the few places to meet and hear remarkable spiritual and consciousness leaders.

But as the world changes, so must we. Online attendance to our events has dropped substantially. The time has come for us to accept that events are no longer a useful part of our service to you. Much of what was once hard to find is now wonderfully easy to find online; the variety and choices are immense.

There was the possibility of returning to live events, but I believe society has changed and it will be a long time before packing 100 people tightly into a room is comfortable again. While we will miss the community created by gathering, here too we must accept the changes that have been handed to us.

Thus, as of December 1, 2022, we will no longer offer events through East West.

We celebrate a beautiful ending to a beautiful department. We thank David Leech, our events manager; Ashley Markowicz, our webmaster and events support staff; and all of the many event managers who have served in this capacity over the years. And we thank you, our customers, for loving and supporting events, and for making it part of the community experience in Mountain View. It is with some sadness that this decision has been reached.

Our staff time and resources will thus be better focused on the store itself — the healing and vibrant place you have come to know and love. The store is doing wonderfully, thanks to all of you. You may continue to enjoy East West Bookshop as a community space, a place for meeting friends, discovering new books and ideas, and finding uplifting gifts and products of every kind. And now, thanks to the all-pedestrian downtown, the whole street is a community space. Enjoy!

Blessings,
David G., manager
