In this special event, Max Dashu will take us on a visual journey. Beginning with the ceremony of Cretan and Mycenaean bee-women, learn how this rite relates to sacred dance, shapeshifting, and Ariadne’s labyrinth. Melissae was the title of the Delphic oracles and the Eleusinian priestesses of Demeter. Bees were a primary symbol of Artemis of Ephesos in Asia. In Hellenic tradition, milk and honey were offered to goddesses. Bees were said to circle stone honeypots in the Cave of the Nymphs, where they wove life itself. In Egypt, the temple of Neith was called House of the Bee. You will learn about the Irish Saint Gobnait who was associated with bees and healing. The Finnish healer, Ilmatar, sent her bee helper to resurrect vitality from the sun in the Kalevala, the epic Finnish creation story. Come and hear about the bee goddess, Bhramari, who evokes the vibrational hum of the cosmos.

Max Dashu founded the Suppressed Histories Archives in 1970 to research and document women’s history and to make the full spectrum of women's history and culture visible and accessible. From her collection of some 50,000 images, Dashu has created and presented hundreds of slideshows internationally at universities, community centers, bookstores, conferences, festivals, schools and libraries. She is the author of Witches and Pagans: Women in European Folk Religion, and the forthcoming Pythias, Melissae and Titanides: Women in Hellenic Mythography. She also publishes videos, such as Woman Shaman: the Ancients and Women’s Power in Global Perspective, and the Deasophy Coloring Book. She teaches with images via her online courses, visual webcasts, her YouTube channel, stream-on-demand videos (Suppressed Histories Portal on Teachable), and the Suppressed Histories page on Facebook.
